Grand Teton removes bear after repeated visitor approaches

WYOMING / RankWire.AI / – Wildlife staff euthanized a black bear near Delta Lake in Grand Teton National Park after repeated encounters with visitors. Officials said the animal had gained access to human food and increasingly approached people at close range. Staff also found it harder to drive the bear away as the encounters continued. Managers determined that the pattern created a public safety risk and euthanized the bear on Sept. 11 after tranquilizing it in the backcountry.

Grand Teton removes bear after repeated visitor approaches
Bear safety remains a priority at Grand Teton after a food-conditioned black bear was removed.

Park staff had received reports earlier in 2026 about a black bear approaching visitors around the popular Delta Lake area. At first, officials did not have enough evidence to establish that the animal had become conditioned to human food. That assessment changed after the bear received several food rewards and continued moving toward people. Wildlife teams monitored its behavior and tried hazing methods designed to push the animal away from areas used by hikers.

Photos released after the incident showed visitors standing only a few feet from the bear. Other images showed the animal investigating food, packs and unattended belongings left among rocks and trees. Officials reminded visitors to gather food and gear immediately when a bear enters the area. They also warned against allowing bears to reach human food under any circumstances. Wildlife crews removed the carcass from the remote site by air the following morning.

Human food can change bear behavior

The National Park Service says bears can quickly learn to connect people with easy access to food. That behavior can increase encounters along trails, near campsites and around other busy recreation areas. In this case, managers cited repeated food rewards, close approaches and resistance to hazing when making their decision. Officials said those factors showed that the animal presented a clear safety concern. Staff considered the available management options before choosing lethal removal.

Relocation can form part of bear management, but officials say it does not always resolve food-conditioned behavior. Bears may return to familiar territory or face conflict with other animals after a move. Managers also need suitable habitat with natural food and limited human activity. For the Delta Lake bear, staff concluded that other practical options had run out. The park describes lethal removal as a last resort when a bear continues to create a direct risk to people.

Visitors urged to follow bear safety rules

Grand Teton National Park continues to warn that black bears and grizzly bears remain active across the park. Visitors must stay at least 100 yards from bears and should avoid approaching them for photographs. Backcountry travelers should move in groups, make noise and carry bear spray where it is easy to reach. People must also secure food and scented items whenever they are not using them. These measures help prevent bears from gaining food rewards and becoming accustomed to people.

The National Park Service says managers typically remove about one or two bears each year in the park after other measures fail. Most of those animals are black bears, according to park guidance. Officials say they use lethal removal when a bear presents a clear human safety risk and other methods prove ineffective. The Delta Lake incident has again highlighted the role of food storage and distance rules in reducing conflict. Park officials continue to ask visitors to report bear encounters and follow established wildlife regulations.
